Variety developed by home gardener Al Novikov, Russia. Introduced to North America by Andrey Baranowsky and featured in the 2007 Seed Savers Yearbook.
Synonyms: Novikov's giant-10 , Gigant-10 Novika , игант-10 Новикова.
Large, beefsteak-like, raspberry-pink fruit weighing 250-500 g. Slightly flattened, with rounded, ribbed shoulders that make the fruit misshapen in the larger varieties. Wide, corky stalk attachment, hollow umbilicus.
Dense, juicy, beefy flesh, very few seeds. Delicious flavor with a hint of acidity.
Seems to shy away from heat; in good growing conditions, the plant can grow to over 3.0 m and produce up to 20 kg of fruit...
Note that although the standard indicates regular foliage, there are occasionally plants with potato foliage.
NB: according to a Russian collector, it seems that this variety is known by another name in Russia: Giant-18 Novika - игант-18 Новикова.
Harvest 2023, bag of approx. 15 seeds.
