An Italian heirloom variety, listed in 1958 in the Gleckler catalog. It takes its name from the town of San Marzano sul Sarno. San Marzano Op is considered by Italians to be the benchmark in terms of taste. Since 2009, it has enjoyed a protected designation of origin (PDO) in the Campania region, covering 41 municipalities in the provinces of Salerno, Avellino and Naples.
Red fruit with green shoulders, oval to cylindrical, elongated, 90 to 120 grams, 6 to 12 cm long. Clusters of 5 to 6 very fleshy fruits. 3 boxes.
Thick, paste-like flesh containing little or no gel and seeds.
Very good flavor when cooked, it is mainly used for keeping or making sauces.
Stocky, highly branched plant with very dense, elongated foliage.
Susceptible to apical necrosis.
Best harvested in the second half of the season.
